The Cottonwood Coal Company was originally organized as a Montana corporation to mine and sell coal in that state. It was reorganized as a Minnesota corporation in 1900 to take over the coal properties of the Montana corporation and to manage mineral lands owned by GN on Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range.
